In total, around a thousand people — from different nationalities— reported similar symptoms to the US government during visits to Havana. Similar cases have also been recorded in other countries, such as Russia, China, Tajikistan and some African countries.
From then on, onlookers and conspiracists believed that these people had been targeted by a type of sonic laser weapon that could cause health problems. However, in a report released in early 2022, the CIA (US Central Intelligence Agency) concluded that those who suffered the mysterious symptoms were not the target of an operation organized by foreign agents.
In the document, the CIA still did not rule out foreign involvement in some cases that had not been explained. But “in hundreds of other cases of possible symptoms, the agency found an alternative and credible explanation,” said sources consulted by NBC at the time.
Prior to this, US officials indicated that the syndrome could be the result of Russian attacks with microwave, but scientists have expressed doubts about the theory.
What happened now
A joint journalistic investigation between the newspapers The Insider, Der Spiegel and the program “60 Minutes”, on the CBS channel, associated the Havana Syndrome with Russia. Released this Monday (1st), the report states that there is “evidence that suggests” that the phenomenon is caused by “the use of directed energy weapons wielded by members of unit 29155 (of the Russian central intelligence department)”.
