An incident during a cruise trip off the coast of São Tomé and Príncipe left nine passengers on a remote island in Central Africa. The group, made up of seven Americans and two Australians, including four elderly people and a pregnant woman, was left stranded after missing the boat’s departure time.

Left behind

According to reports, the American couple, Jill and Jay Campbell, stated that the ship’s captain was informed of the delay, but refused to let the group board. “The captain could have made an easy decision to send one of the support boats to pick us up, carry us safely and continue on our way,” says the couple.

Also in the group was an 80-year-old woman who missed the departure due to a concussion suffered while touring the island. The situation was worsened by the fact that only the Campbell couple had a credit card, having to pay for food, accommodation and other basic care for the group, totaling around R$25,000.

Abandoned passengers: the bureaucratic dilemma

After seeking help from the United States embassy in Angola, the group now hopes to return to the cruise by flying to Gambia, however, they are awaiting confirmation of their return request. Meanwhile, the company responsible for the cruise, Norwegian Cruise Linestated that passengers missed the last notice to return to the ship and are responsible for ensuring that they return to the ship at the established time.

In an official statement, the Norwegian Cruise Line declared that he was in contact with local authorities to understand the actions necessary for the group’s return. The company informed that the costs for returning passengers to the ship at the nearest port are the responsibility of the travelers themselves. The situation remains developing as the group waits for a resolution to their situation.
