The Argentine government also stated that it welcomed opposition political leaders at the embassy “with the support of the inviolability enshrined in article 22 of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations, of which both nations, Argentina and Venezuela, are signatories”.

According to the newspaper Clarin, the opponents taking shelter in the embassy have links with the Vente Venezuela party, led by leader Maria Corina Machado. The names were not released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Below is the statement, in Spanish:

Relations between Argentina and Venezuela are going through one of their worst moments since Milei assumed the presidency. He is critical of Maduro.

Elections in Venezuela

Venezuela holds presidential elections on July 28, 2024. In January, the TSJ (Supreme Court of Justice of Venezuela) banned María Corina Machado, leader of the opposition, from holding public office for the next 15 years, removing her from this election.

On Tuesday (26 March), Venezuela’s main opposition coalition, the PUD (Democratic Unitary Platform), managed to register a candidate to contest the elections. The acronym states that it needed to make a provisional registration, after Corina Yoris was prevented from registering to participate in the election.

The president, Nicolás Maduro, registered during the afternoon of Monday (25th March), while his candidacy was confirmed on March 16th. If the candidate wins, it will be his 3rd consecutive term.
