A man who disappeared from Bilbao, Spain, 21 years ago, without leaving a trace, was found alive in the city of Caparroso, in Navarra.

According to Spanish newspapers, the case happened in 2003. The man disappeared without giving any information to his family, including his wife, children and brothers. At the time, he was facing economic and health problems.

After disappearing, the man rebuilt his life in Caparroso. There, he has lived since 2007 with a new family. He also joined a group of stallholders traveling around northern Spain.

Although he disappeared in 2003, the family only reported the case six years later, in 2009. At that time, they believed he was still in Bilbao, in the Zorrotza neighborhood, living on the streets.

The Civil Guard investigated the case and even collected DNA from one of the children for identification, but did not need to use it. The police also found no death records.

The man’s whereabouts were discovered through an active bank account in his name. The Civil Guard identified monthly movements in the account. On March 19, authorities located him in Caparroso and confirmed that he was in good health.

When asked about his interest in contacting the original family, the man said he did not have their phone number, but that, if they wanted, they could contact the number of a relative of the new family to arrange a meeting. The press does not say whether the reunion has already taken place, but says that the families have already had first contact.
