Ship began to divert two minutes before impact
The accident happened in the early hours of Tuesday (26), when the vessel hit a pillar of the bridge, instead of passing under it. At least six people fell into the Patapsco River and were not found. On Tuesday night, Maryland police said the victims were “possibly” dead, considering the time that had passed since their disappearance and the low water temperature. Divers will resume the search this Wednesday morning (27).
MarineTraffic data, in Baltimore local time, indicates that:
- 1:23 am: the vessel followed in a straight line, on a course of 140 degrees, towards the central span of the bridge, at 15.7 km/h
- 1:25 am: the ship starts to deviate to the right, at 141 degrees, with a speed of 16.1 km/h. Images show that the ship’s lights went out
- 1:27 am: the impact occurs with one of the bridge pillars, with a course of 152 degrees and a speed of 14 km/h

The Dali ship, which was carrying several containers, hit the pillar of the Francis Scott Kay Bridge at 1:27 am, at around 14 km/h, according to MarineTraffic.
