Six Venezuelan dissidents are sheltering in the Argentine embassy in Caracas, as confirmed by sources at Casa Rosada, the Argentine president’s official residence, to the Infobae news portal.

According to the portal, which does not identify its sources, President Javier Milei and Chancellor Diana Mondino “accepted that the six persecuted men enter the diplomatic representation in Venezuela and, from that moment onwards – due to international laws – they were under asylum from the Argentina”.

Recently, other Argentine press outlets, such as the Clarín newspaper, published information about the presence of Venezuelan opponents with preventive arrest warrants in the Argentine diplomatic representation in Venezuela.

The Infobae portal identified five of these opponents as Pedro Urruchurtu, Magallí Meda, Humberto Villalobos, Claudia Macero and Omar González, but did not reveal the name of the sixth individual.

The opponents’ entry into the embassy occurred gradually, starting last week.

Relations between Argentina and Venezuela, which were close during the mandates of Peronists Néstor Kirchner (2003-2007) and Cristina Kirchner (2007-2015), have weakened since Milei took office at Casa Rosada in December last year. Milei is a scathing critic of the Venezuelan dictator, Nicolás Maduro, who is Chavista.

The Argentine government is one of the signatories, together with the governments of Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay, of a statement expressing concern about the impossibility of Corina Yoris, opposition candidate in the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), to register his candidacy in the July 28 elections, where Maduro will seek new re-election.
