In the series O Caso Asunta, which is a hit in the Netflix catalogue, “the big question is why they did it”.

The Asunta Case debuted on Netflix as one of the most anticipated Spanish series and is being very successful among the platform’s subscribers. The series is inspired by real events and narrates the investigation into the disappearance and murder of the girl Asunta Basterra, the subject of a media circus 10 years ago and, even after her parents were convicted, The big question was never answered: Why did they do it?

Responding to what led Alfonso Basterra and Rosario Porto, who always defended innocence, to end their daughter’s life is the guiding thread of the series on Netflix, developed by Ramón Campos and his team, who in 2017 were already in charge of “What the truth hides: The Asunta case”the praised documentary series about the same case.

“There was a moment in 2021 when we realized that we had a lot of material that had never been told and that helped us understand, if not the moment of the murder, then how it got to that moment”, reflected Campos in an interview with SensaCine about the new series . “For me the question was: if this family wanted their daughter, why did this happen? Nobody was there, but understanding how you got there will at least allow you to make a mental image of what could have happened”, he explained about the fact for the series to explore what life was like for the recently divorced couple at the time of the tragedy.

“We will never know what happened”: Crime that shocked Spain inspired new Netflix series

If you’ve seen the Netflix series, you’ll know that The Asunta Case builds two possible theories about what happened to Asunta Basterra, fictionalizing through the actors how the events that preceded the crime unfolded.

However, there are actually two more theories, which were initially also going to be reconstructed and filmed in the same way for the series, but which they chose to include only as a mention. Ramón Campos responded to SensaCine about these theories:

“There were many theories about what had happened. Theories that came to us over the years, even after the documentary”, says Campos, before listing the four. In addition to the two we see in the series, there is “a third theory, which is the theory that they weren’t and it was someone else”:

We encountered a difficulty when we were telling this in images. That said, it’s easy to say that they weren’t and that it was someone else who took Asunta, but it’s necessary to include that other person: A man? A woman? What age?

“This has already forced us to fictionalize a lot who that person was and, therefore, we preferred to leave it to the words of Rosário’s lawyer”, he continues.

“And the fourth theory was a theory in which Rosario had taken Asunta home, given her pills to make her sleep and left her in bed. Someone else went to kill her,” he summarizes about the fourth theory. “And that’s why Rosário left. And this other person is the one who got rid of the body. A third man. So the same thing happens a little: Who is this third man? We put a man, a woman, in two people… ?”.

This created a lot of difficulties for us, so what we decided was to keep the ones that we actually know were also raised in the trial and remove the other two

“I think the big question is why did they do it”, said Javier Gutiérrez, who plays the investigating judge of the case in an interview with SensaCine. “I believe it was them and there is a court decision on this, but the big question as citizens and as a society that we ask ourselves is how could a rich family, with the desire to have a child and raise him, commit such an atrocity? “.

“I think one of the successes of the series is precisely this”, adds Carlos Blanco, who plays one of the police officers who conducted the investigation. “Let the viewer decide… It could be like this, or it could be like this, or it could be another way. I have mine, my character’s is what it is and Javier’s character’s is very different.” I believe the right thing to do is for the viewer to make their own decision. “It’s really a matter of each person breathing from of their individuality”, agrees María León, who also plays a researcher. “And draw conclusions about each person based on their reality, because it is something very cruel and very difficult to humanize. We, as actors, try to defend him and humanize him as much as possible, but now it’s up to the viewer.”
