The European Space Agency (ESA), using the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter probe, captured curious images on Mars. The phenomenon shows images similar to spiders and, therefore, attracts attention.

The shapes were seen in a region at the planet’s south pole, known as “Inca City”. They were formed from ice, shortly after the change of seasons – from winter to the first – on the red planet. After the release of carbon dioxide, cracks are formed and, seen from above, they resemble arachnids.

The “Inca City” – or Angustus Labyrinthus – was discovered by NASA’s Mariner 9 probe in 1972. The name was chosen due to linear mountain ranges, which were initially believed to be petrified sand dunes or remains of ancient glaciers.

The 2002 Mars Orbiter probe, according to Live Science, points out an 86-kilometer-wide crater at the site, which may have emerged after a collision with a celestial body. Geometric ridges may have been formed due to magma from the impact.

Curious images indicate pareidolia, when the human mind sees pictures of things that are not, in fact, real. In addition to the example of “spiders” on Mars, another very common example occurs when observing clouds, which often have shapes similar to animals, objects, among others. However, in the end, they are unreal and were created by the mind itself.
