Michael Masi will officially return to the world of motorsport after having starred in one of the latest scandals in Formula 1 with Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton. As has been rumored for months, the former F1 director will take over as chairman of the Supercar Commission.

For those who don’t remember, the director who was involved in a controversy with Verstappen and Hamilton was sacked by the FIA as race director earlier this year after the end of the 2021 Grand Prix. The Australian has taken over from Charlie Whiting since 2019. Initially he took on the role of caretaker but was later named as the newest director of the race.

Controversy with Hamilton

In 2021, Masi became one of the most well-known names in this universe and his performance was the subject of several criticisms. In addition to the scandal in the final with Hamilton and Verstappen, there were rumors that he was very capricious.

According to rumors, he frequently came into contact with team owners. However, his name came to real prominence after his decision to bring the safety car into Abu Dhabi one lap before the end of the race.

The decision ended up hurting Lewis Hamilton, angering Mercedes and giving Max Verstappen the advantage he needed to win the championship and take home his first world title in 2021. After getting involved in this controversy and dividing opinions, Masi even received death threats.

return to car

After leaving the FIA, the name that was embroiled in controversy with Hamilton found a new position in his own country. He took over from Neil Cromptom as chairman of the Supercar Commission. The post marks his return to motorsport and his own country.

The series is played in Australia, although the next race in his new role is the ITM Auckland SuperSprint in New Zealand.
