Mercedes will hold a private test at Silverstone next week with two drivers competing for the same objective: to impress the team and win a place on the Formula 1 grid.

Kimi Antonelli, a 17-year-old Italian currently racing in F2, will have the opportunity to show his talent behind the wheel of the W13, Mercedes’ 2022 car. However, to be evaluated more rigorously, he will share the cockpit with Mick Schumacher, reserve driver for the German team.

Antonelli has emerged as a strong candidate to replace Lewis Hamilton, who will move to Ferrari in 2025. His precocious talent caught the attention of Toto Wolff, head of Mercedes, who had already promoted other tests for the driver this season.

Facing Schumacher directly in the same car and on the same track will represent an important challenge for Antonelli. The German, despite having lost his seat at Haas after two seasons in Formula 1, has valuable experience that will serve as a parameter for Mercedes’ evaluation.

In addition to the main vacancy at Mercedes, rumors point to a possible even more immediate debut for Antonelli. Williams would have requested a special exemption from the FIA so that the driver, still 17 years old, could race in F1 this season. Williams boss James Vowles maintains good relations with Mercedes and is reportedly considering whether to retain Logan Sargeant, who could be replaced later this year.

Despite some speculation, Vowles categorically denied the possibility of Antonelli running in the next race at Imola. The focus, for now, appears to be on Silverstone. A good performance against Schumacher in W13 could put Antonelli even closer to a permanent place in Formula 1.
