The renowned former Brazilian Basketball Team player Jorge Guerra, better known as Guerrinha, will be in the region next week in a sports initiative promoted by Sesc Birigui, bringing with it not only its expertise, but also learning and interaction opportunities for the local community. The action is part of Sesc’s special program in celebration of Challenge Day, a global celebration of physical activity and sport.

Next Wednesday, the 15th, Guerrinha will teach the “Basketball Education” training course, aimed especially at teachers in the region. In this action, practical and pedagogical tools developed by the former national team athlete during his career will be offered. Participants will have access to information about rules, exercises, support content and even suggested activities and tips for adapting space and structure for classes. Classes are now closed.

On Thursday, the 16th, and Friday, the 17th, Guerrinha will visit some cities in the region, leading basketball clinics open to the community. On Thursday, at 9 am, the meeting will be at the José Garcia Sports Gym, in Guararapesand at 3pm, at Ginásio Antônio Sanches, in Single island. On Friday, at 9 am, the professional will be at the João Santos Meira Municipal Gymnasium, in Linsand at 6pm, at Sesc Birigui.

During this sporting event, Guerrinha will chat with those present, sharing some of his vast experience and giving technical tips about the sport. Entry is free.

“In this format created by Sesc and which I have already taken to several cities in the country, we approach basketball in different ways: social, collegiate, initiation, training, and we exchange knowledge. Because I was a national team player and an active coach of the NBB (Novo Basquete Brasil) – the name of the Brazilian adult men’s basketball championship – this draws attention and attracts more people, which is extremely positive”, he says.

For the coach, involving city halls and schools is essential, because it is the educators who will have contact with the beginning players and who will spread basketball in the country of football.

“Football in Brazil is hors-concours. But volleyball and basketball are two sports that bring together fans, competitors, and have well-organized competitions, at national league level, youth categories, and federation. I see that basketball is growing at the level of clubs and associations. What is missing in Brazil is to return to investing in the base of the pyramid, which is schools, because if there is sport in schools, the number of participants will increase”, he argues.
