Vienna (Austria) – After much speculation, Austrian Dominic Thiem finally went public this Friday to talk about retirement. Through a video on social media, the former number 3 in the world made the end of his career official, which will take place when the season ends.

“Hello everybody! I have some very important but also very sad news to tell you. The 2024 season will be my last, I will end my career at the end of the season”, said the 30-year-old Austrian, who currently occupies only 117th place in the rankings.

“There are a few reasons behind this, the first of which is definitely my wrist, which is not the way I want it to be. The second is the internal part, I was thinking about this decision for a long time and dealing with it in the most careful way possible, thinking about my entire tennis journey”, added Thiem.

Professional since 2011, the Austrian has 348 wins and 210 losses at ATP level, with 17 victories, the biggest of which was the 2020 US Open title, which curiously was his last until then. After the triumph in New York, he faced problems with his right wrist, underwent surgery, was forced to change his forehand grip and never returned to his best level.

“I was successful, I won trophies that I never dreamed of. My journey was incredible with all its ups and downs, they were incredible experiences that I am grateful to have lived, but in the end everything comes to a conclusion and I decided to end my career at the end of this season”, said Thiem.

“I had many conversations with my family about my career and my past. I’m excited for everything that comes next”, concluded the Austrian, who promised to provide more information about his latest tournaments and his farewell to professional tennis in the coming days.
