The Brazilian Judo Confederation (CBJ) released the list of 18 athletes who will represent Brazil at the World Championships in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates. The competition in the United Arab Emirates, held between the 19th and 24th of this month, is the last on the World Tour before the Olympic Games. The main highlight was the absence of Olympic medalist Mayra Aguiar.

In contact, Mayra Aguiar’s advisor informed that she “comes with a different program” and that last year she competed in some Grand Slams with positive results. Now she “is completely focused on the Paris Games”. Mayra has not yet competed in any international tournament in 2024.

Furthermore, the CBJ also stated that Brazil’s main focus in judo at the World Cup in Abu Dahbi will be to secure points to qualify four more judokas for the Olympic Games. Also already guaranteed in Paris, Rafaela Silva and Rafael Silva “Baby” are also not on the list.

Vacancies up for grabs

Within this logic, the CBJ called up judokas who are still competing internally for the Olympic spot. These are the cases of Amanda Lima and Natasha Ferreira in the 48kg; Ketleyn Quadros and Nauana Silva in the 63kg; Ellen Froner and Luana Carvalho in the 70kg; and Michel Augusto in the 60kg. He is already in the direct classification zone, but needs more points to avoid the risk of being overtaken.

Of the athletes already called up for the Olympic Games, ten will be in Abu Dhabi, they are: Larissa Pimenta (52kg), Beatriz Souza (+78kg), Willian Lima (66kg), Daniel Cargnin (73kg), Guilherme Schmidt (81kg), Rafael Macedo (90kg) and Leonardo Gonçalves (100kg). In addition to maintaining a competitive pace, some are also looking for better positions to reach the top seed in Paris.
