McLaren announced this Thursday afternoon (9) that current Formula 2 champion, Théo Pourchaire, will defend the team in the 2024 Indy season until the end of the year, with the exception of the Indianapolis 500. The driver debuted in the American category in Long Beach, and also raced in the Alabama stage, at Barber Motorsport Park.

Initially, McLaren would have in its Indy team David Malukas, who stood out the previous year for Dale Coyne. However, a bicycle accident took the rider out of the first stages. Weeks later, the English team opted to fire the American. For the Indy 500, the team will have another former Formula 2 driver: Callum Ilott.

“IndyCar has some of the best racing, and now I can say that with experience. I’m excited to take on this challenge with McLaren for the rest of the season. This is a special opportunity and I am committed to learning and improving every race weekend. I enjoyed my first two races with the team and I know we have a lot of potential ahead of us,” said Pourchaire.

“We are excited to continue working with Théo. He has proven to be a quick rookie, and we believe his skill set and learning mindset will support his development as he becomes more comfortable racing at Indy. Now it’s about continuing to grow and turning those learnings into results,” said McLaren boss Gavin Ward.

The next stage of Indy will be the Indianapolis Grand Prix, scheduled for this Saturday, starting at 4pm.
