Marquinhos is Flu’s top scorer in the Libertadores, with two goals. Since the beginning of the year, Fernando Diniz has played him in three matches as a full-back. Commentator Carlos Eduardo Mansur gave his opinion on improvisation.

— You have to take into account that in almost all of Diniz’s choices, when faced with two options, the normal thing is for him to make the bolder, more offensive choice. (Marquinhos in LD) is not something that goes against what the players expect from him. I think the group, the cast, is not surprised by the choice. Fluminense tries a lot to get the ball out, and sometimes when it manages to overcome the opponent’s pressure, it needs fast players to accelerate the back of that pressure — said Mansur, adding:

— As Diniz brings a lot of midfielders, sometimes, to make the exit, and sometimes puts the full-back behind that pressure, Marquinhos can be very useful in this. The midfielders and defenders can overcome this first pressure, he is another option for accelerating the back. So, I think this is another use of it in the role. It’s natural for something to get lost. Every choice in football has losses and gains. He may not be as good a scorer as a full-back, but he can do other things that will contribute to the team.

Marquinhos is directly responsible for two of the three goals scored by Fluminense in the Libertadores so far. In his debut against Alianza Lima, he played in his official position and headed free at the second post after a corner from Douglas Costa, finding the net for the Peruvian club. The goal secured an important point away from home – the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Against Colo-Colo, at Maracanã, he continued his good run and not only found the net for Cortés, but he was also a waiter, assisting Cano’s goal. Fueled by his performance against Atlético-MG, the number 77 arrives for the clash moved to the side, but the name of the position differs more than his obligations on the pitch.

Against Galo, he was almost a winger, giving numerical superiority in the sector and also serving as an escape for the counterattacks of Fernando Diniz’s team. With the corridor left by Douglas Costa, Marquinhos surpassed Guilherme Arana, went deep and made a precise cross for Cano to open the scoring in Cariacica, just three minutes into the game.

Colo-Colo and Fluminense face each other at 9pm this Thursday, at the Monumental stadium in Santiago, in the fourth round of the Conmebol Libertadores group stage. Tricolor has five points and is at the top of group A.
