Rome Italy) – Swiss Stan Wawrinka waited until the last moment to try to get his playing conditions ready and compete in the Masters 1000 in Rome, but it was not possible. With physical problems, the 39-year-old Swiss announced his withdrawal from the competition on the eve of his debut against Russian Roman Safiullin.

Former number 3 in the world and currently only in 87th place in the rankings, Wawrinka had managed to enter the main draw after withdrawal of Argentine Facundo Diaz Acosta, suffering from a shoulder injury. This would be the Swiss’s 19th participation in the Foro Italico and his best result was runner-up in 2008.

In the current season, Wawrinka played just nine games and won two, in the debuts of Buenos Aires and Marrakech, both level 250 events. In the Masters 1000, the Swiss played only in Indian Wells and Monte Carlo and did not pass the opening round.

Frenchman eliminated by Monteiro inherits vacancy

Taking his place in the group will be Frenchman Corentin Moutet, who was eliminated by Thiago Monteiro from Ceará in the final round of qualifying this Tuesday, but ended up inheriting the place as lucky loser. At 25, he will play on Roman clay for the second time, after falling in the first round last year. In 2020 and 2021, he did not pass qualifying.

On social media, Moutet announced his entry into the competition and also briefly commented on the defeat to the Brazilian earlier. “Tough game today against Monteiro, but I was called up as a lucky loser and I’ll start all over again on Thursday [na verdade quarta] playing the first round in Rome. The path continues and I try to progress a little more every day. We remain firm and do the best we can”, wrote the French player.
