Wiesbaden (Germany) – After two and a half years, São Paulo native Laura Pigossi once again won a title on the doubles circuit. Playing alongside the British Samantha Murray Sharan, the Brazilian won this Saturday the ITF W100 in Wiesbaden, on clay courts in Germany, by defeating the Japanese Himeno Sakatsume and the Bosnian Anita Wagner with the score of 7/5 and 6/2 in 1h26 departure.

This is the 42nd and biggest title of Pigossi’s professional career in the doubles event, and the first since November 2021, when he triumphed in the W25 of Aparecida de Goiânia with Czech Anna Siskova. Among all the achievements of the 29-year-old from São Paulo in this specialty, there are 12 trophies at W10 level, seven at W15, 21 at W25, one at W60 and now the first at W100.

With the campaign on German clay, Laura will gain more than 40 positions in the ranking, rising from the current 294th to 253rd place, being just five points away from the top 250. Her best career mark was 125th place in February 2020. Also in the doubles, she won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 and gold at the Pan-American Games in Santiago last year, both with fellow countrywoman Luisa Stefani.

The British Samantha Murray, Pigossi’s partner this week in Wiesbaden, is 185th in the world in doubles and will jump to 155th place next Monday, having a personal record of 76th place in 2022. Like the Brazilian, this was the biggest title of Murray’s career, reaching her 30th doubles win and her second in 2024. In February, she had won the Roehampton W50 with compatriot Freya Christie.

Final full of twists

The start of this Saturday’s match couldn’t be better for Pigossi and Murray, who confirmed their zero serve and got the first break of the game in the second game. However, they did not maintain their advantage for long and saw their opponents win four consecutive games and take the lead on the scoreboard. When it came time to close the partial, however, the Japanese and the Bosnian did very badly and had their serve broken without winning a single point. With morale after the reaction, the Brazilian and the British took the lead, and, with a new break, won the first set.

After starting with a deficit at the start of the second half, Laura and Samantha put their heads together and overcame Sakatsume and Wagner’s serve three times, thus guaranteeing victory and the title on German clay. The Brazilian duo finished the match with a good use of 71% of the points won with the first serve, despite the low average of 39% with the second, in addition to four double faults committed and no aces in the entire game.
