Veteran Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso has revealed his desire to work with Adrian Newey, renowned Formula 1 designer currently at Red Bull Racing. During the preparation for the Miami Grand Prix, Alonso was full of praise for Newey, calling him “the best of all time in Formula 1” and a “legend of the sport”.

Although Lance Stroll seemed uninterested in Newey’s possible arrival at Aston Martin, Alonso, at 42 years old and seeking his third world title, was quite enthusiastic. “I always wanted to work with him, at least once in my life,” said Alonso. He also revealed that he will have an Aston Martin Valkyrie in his garage, a car designed by Newey, considering it a “little gift” for himself.

Throughout his career, Alonso raced for several teams, but never a Newey team. However, he revealed that he had been close to working with the designer several times. “I spoke to him a few times because these meetings in the past were not just with Christian and Helmut. Some of them were actually with Adrian, and I always expressed my admiration for him, and he always shared his respect for me,” commented Alonso.

Regarding the possibility of Newey joining Aston Martin, Alonso was uncertain, indicating that the decision would be up to Lawrence Stroll and Newey himself. “We are very happy with our technical department. Obviously Adrian is the best out there, but he needs to fit into the team, and that’s more of Lawrence’s decision and Adrian’s ultimate decision,” he explained.

Alonso also commented on his influence on the team’s internal decisions, suggesting that Newey’s signing would depend more on the team and Newey’s own wishes regarding his future in Formula 1. “I don’t know if he will come this weekend. I hope not, but let’s see what he decides”, concluded Alonso, leaving the door open for future negotiations.

This weekend in Miami promises not only action on the track, but also significant action behind the scenes, as Formula 1 continues to evolve and attract the best talent from the world of motorsport.
