The organization of the Formula 1 United States GP has been facing fury from fans, following the announcement of the artists who will perform in Austin, at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA). The expectation was for a big show, comparable to Taylor Swift in 2016, but the confirmation of Sting and Eminem caused widespread disappointment.

This frustration intensified when COTA attempted to repurchase tickets already sold. The fan theory was that the confirmed attractions would be replaced by more important ones, such as Beyoncé, which would allow tickets to be resold at a higher price, increasing the event’s profit.

On social media, the US GP’s official account was bombarded with comments like ‘Where’s Beyoncé?’ and ‘I can’t believe this is why you wanted to repurchase your tickets. Ridiculous!’.

Bobby Epstein, president of COTA, tried to justify the strategy to the Daily Mail: “We will put a limited number of tickets on sale again, at a slightly higher price, after the shows are announced.”

The plan, however, backfired. The amount offered by COTA to buy back general tickets (US$350) was considered negligible, as the original price paid by fans was US$299 (tax excluded). Last year’s general admission sold for $475.
