Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard believes that Lewis Hamilton’s arrival at Ferrari will be positive for the Italian team. In an interview with the ‘Formula for Success’ podcast, Coulthard highlighted the seven-time champion’s leadership as a factor that can strengthen the Scuderia.
“I don’t know if he is known for taking the technical team along. When he left McLaren, where he was for several years, and went to Mercedes, I don’t remember anyone going with him. But what he definitely brings, besides speed and commitment, is the ability to unite any kind of divisive element within a team. And as you know, when you have hundreds of people, or in the case of Ferrari, thousands, not everyone can be friends”, said the former driver.
Coulthard went on to highlight what Hamilton could bring to Ferrari: “He adds the ability to bring people together. When he walks into a room, slowly and steadily, everyone stops talking and turns to him, waiting for him to say something. It was the most fascinating thing I have ever experienced. And I think Lewis Hamilton has that ability.”
The former Red Bull Racing driver also compared Hamilton to F1 legend Ayrton Senna, the Brit’s idol. “That’s where driver leadership comes in. Ayrton Senna, who I met over the years, brought the team together. I worked with him briefly at Williams before his tragic death. And it’s like with Hamilton, when Senna entered a room, everyone also stopped talking and turned to him, waiting for him to say something, and I think Lewis has that same ability”, concluded Coulthard.
