Adrian Newey’s future in Formula 1 remains uncertain, and in an interview with Motorsport.com, a team boss who preferred to remain anonymous, warned of serious consequences for Red Bull Racing.

“It would be an absolute disaster for Red Bull if Newey was released to join a competing team,” said the aforementioned team boss. “Christian Horner (Red Bull boss) would look like a complete idiot. Just like Martin Whitmarsh at McLaren when he handed Brawn the keys to Mercedes, which began their years of dominance in F1.”

This comparison goes back to 2008, when Honda announced its exit from the category. At that time, Brawn GP bought the team, and with the approval of Whitmarsh, McLaren boss at the time, used engines supplied by Mercedes. The result was immediate: Brawn GP won the constructors’ title in 2009 with Jenson Button winning the drivers’ title, and Mercedes subsequently acquired part of the team, ending the exclusive supply of engines between McLaren and the German manufacturer.

Newey continues working on Red Bull’s RB17 hypercar, fulfilling his ‘gardening leave’, so, from the first quarter of 2025, he will be free to negotiate with any team. Ferrari and Aston Martin are mentioned as possible destinations.

Newey himself left the door open for a new challenge in his official statement leaving Red Bull.
