Madrid (Spain) – For the first time entering a Masters 1000 as seed number 1, the Italian Jannik Sinner honored his position in his debut in Madrid and easily passed his compatriot Lorenzo Sonego, who was unable to put up much resistance and was defeated with the right to “tire” , falling with the final score of 6/0 and 6/3, in just 69 minutes of play.

Sinner is now waiting for the duel between Russian Pavel Kotov and Australian Jordan Thompson, 32nd pre-classified, to be defined to find out who he will play against in the next round. It will be the first time that the Italian will cross paths with Thompson, 30 years old and currently 33rd in the world, or with Kotov, 25 years old and 72nd in the ATP rankings.

With a great record against players outside the top 20, Sinner scored his 27th consecutive victory against rivals in this ranking range. He has not lost to a tennis player below the top 20 since last year’s Cincinnati Masters 1000, when he was overtaken by Serbian Dusan Lajovic, then ranked 66th in the world.

Sinner dominates in numbers

Sinner’s performance with the first serve was very good, losing only four of the 29 points he played (86%), and even with the second ball he had good numbers (62%). While he finished the match with 79% of points won with serve, Sonego won less than half (48%), suffered four breaks in seven opportunities given up and didn’t even have a break-point of his own.

The difference between the two Italians in numbers was so great on the court and in the final numbers, with Sinner scoring almost twice as many winning balls (16 to 9) and making less than half of Sonego’s unforced errors (5 to 12). The vice-leader of the ranking still had great success with the network, winning 83% of the points against just 50% for his compatriot.

Two quiet sets for Sinner

Right away, the main favorite in Madrid showed that he would not give his rival a chance, winning the first 10 points of the match. Sonego only managed to win one point in the third game and maintained a very weak performance throughout the first set, in which he was unable to trouble his compatriot, suffered three consecutive breaks and received a “tyre”.

Sinner opened the second half by winning his seventh game in a row, he had a chance to break soon after, but Sonego finally came from scratch and broke the negative streak. But soon after, the world number 2 beat his compatriot’s serve once again and then just managed the advantage until the end to seal his victory.
