Thiago Monteiro achieved a great victory at the Madrid Open. This Saturday, world number 118 surprised Stefanos Tsitsipas, world number 7 and sixth seed in the Masters 1,000. With a double 6/4, the Brazilian dispatched the Greek, one of the favorites on clay in Madrid, to go to the third round, joining Thiago Wild. João Fonseca tries to be the third Brazilian to advance in a duel with the British Cameron Norrie, scheduled for 2:10 pm (Brasília time) – O ge monitor in real time.

It was the first time that Monteiro reached the third round of a Masters 1,000 in ten participations in tournaments at this level. It was also the Brazilian’s fourth victory against a top-10 tennis player – he has already beaten Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Holger Rune and Carlos Alcaraz, the latter due to injury.

Tsitsipas had great results this month with the title at the Masters 1,000 in Monte Carlo and runner-up at the ATP 500 in Barcelona. Monteiro, however, was not intimidated and it was necessary not to give up any break in service in the match. He had an 89% success rate on the first serve. In both sets he got an early break and held the advantage until closing at 6/4.

In the third round, the Brazilian will face the winner of the clash between Czech Jiri Lehecka, 30th seed, and Serbian Hamad Medjedovic, who skipped qualifying.
