“Corinthians is experiencing the perfect storm today”, says Rizek
The recreation of the under-23 category from next year is the subject of internal debate at Corinthians. The club’s base management views the idea favorably, but understands that it is necessary to have investors and also a fuller calendar.
Corinthians closed the under-23 team in 2022, after controversy due to the large number of athletes in the squad and the few promotions to the professional team. The following year, the CBF ended the category’s Brasileirão.
– For Corinthians, it is worth recreating the under-23 if there is no cost. Our idea is through partnerships. We have that desire, but this year it’s no longer possible. Registration for the Copa Paulista is now closed and there is no longer a calendar – explains Claudinei Alves, director of the black and white base.
According to Claudinei, in this partnership model, investors would take athletes to Corinthians and earn a percentage of their sales. FIFA prohibits third parties from participating in economic rights, but it is possible for the player himself to have a share.
– Boys who “overcame” the age to be in the under-20s would move up to the under-23 team and there would be no change in economic rights. Those who arrived at Corinthians through investors would have their rights divided. Our main focus is to protect players over 20 years of age who are not yet ready to become professionals – comments the director.
The current commander of the Corinthians base criticizes the way the under-23s were used by previous administrations of the club. In his view, many athletes were hired for the category and few ended up being used later.
– We don’t want to do things like it was before, when due attention wasn’t given and everyone came from outside. An example: do you hear about Arthur Sousa (under-20 striker)? He’s just training. If I have an under-23 team with this boy playing, he stands out, he will be in the showcase and gaining rotation. It’s much more interesting – he argues.
Recently, the recreation of the Brazilian Under-23 was a topic of discussion among club presidents at the CBF, but the debate did not evolve.
While waiting to move forward with this idea, Corinthians created intermediate categories, such as under-16 and under-18, which do not have a calendar.
The under-20s also got bigger and registered 75 names in the Campeonato Paulista (counting under-17 players and athletes who are already in the professional ranks).
