Paris, France) – During the press conference to introduce the 2024 edition of Roland Garros, tournament director Amélie Mauresmo could not escape talking about Spaniard Rafael Nadal, record holder of titles on Parisian clay, who could make his last appearance in the competition this year.

She left the tournament doors open for Nadal and hopes to be able to count on the Spaniard this year. “We cross our fingers, for him, but also for us, because we want to welcome him here at Roland Garros. He is at home and he knows it”, commented Mauresmo last Thursday during the interview.

The doubt about the presence of the 14-time Roland Garros champion in this year’s edition was largely due to his statement before his debut at the Masters 1000 in Madrid, when he stated that is not yet physically ready to compete in the French Grand Slam.

Mauresmo preferred not to say anything before he has a better idea of what Rafa will do. “Knowing whether there will be a tribute or not, this year, next year, depends a lot on him and the decisions he makes. We are waiting to see and we will follow his wishes”, added the tournament director.

Another topic that could not be left out was the completion of Suzanne Lenglen’s retractable roof. “This coverage will allow us, in the event of bad weather, to have a little more flexibility in our programming and the conduct of games throughout this fortnight”, highlighted Mauresmo.

However, the director of the French Grand Slam ruled out the possibility of organizing night sessions there, as has happened on the Philippe Chatrier court in recent years, citing security reasons. “But it can be used during qualifying week if necessary,” she added.
