Government of Sergipe intensifies actions against food and nutritional insecurity with the People’s Plate program

The Government of Sergipe, aware of the persistent problem of food and nutritional insecurity, has been committed to developing a series of programs and actions to assist the vulnerable population in the state. One of the highlights is the Prato do Povo program, which has already reached 21 municipalities in Sergipe with low levels of human development.

Prato do Povo provides daily access to ready-made and balanced meals for the socially and economically vulnerable population, distributing up to 4,200 dishes per day, from Monday to Friday. Coordinated by the State Secretariat for Social Assistance, Inclusion and Citizenship (Seasic), the program has already delivered 150,000 meals this April, benefiting more than 11,700 assisted families.

Furthermore, the Government of Sergipe restructured the Food Acquisition Program (PAA), distributing more than 747 tons of food to the municipalities covered. Through Restaurante Popular Padre Pedro, the capital of Sergipe also receives nutritionally balanced meals, totaling 826,686 deliveries between lunch and dinner from 2023 to 2024.

To complement these actions, the Cisterns Program aims to promote access to water for human consumption and food production. The Secretary of Social Assistance, Inclusion and Citizenship, Érica Mitidieri, highlights the government’s continued commitment to developing new projects, such as food banks, community kitchens and agroecological gardens, to combat hunger in Sergipe.

In parallel, the State Government invests in initiatives to generate employment and income. The Secretary of State for Labor, Employment and Entrepreneurship, Jorge Teles, highlights labor intermediation, the Qualifica Sergipe program, First Employment (PPE) and the strengthening of the creative and solidarity economy, including local crafts.

With a comprehensive look at food insecurity, the Government of Sergipe seeks not only to combat the consequences, but also the causes of this problem, aiming to guarantee a better quality of life and dignity for the entire population of Sergipe.
