Frog with glued mouth is rescued in Jaraguá do Sul, SC
A case of animal cruelty mobilized a rescue team in Jaraguá do Sul, in the North of Santa Catarina. A cane toad with its mouth glued together was delivered to the Jaraguaense Environmental Foundation (Fujama). “I’ve been working with wildlife rescue for eight years and I’ve never seen anything like this,” said biologist Christian Raboch.
The frog, a male, was delivered by a resident to Fujama on Friday (3) inside a cardboard box.
“To her surprise, and even more so to ours, this animal had its mouth glued shut. Because it was like that, if we didn’t do anything the animal would probably end up dying because it wouldn’t be able to feed itself”, reported the biologist.
Therefore, the team took the amphibian to the veterinarian. “We used warm water and also mineral oil to try to remove its mouth. After some time, very calmly, luckily we managed to open the animal’s mouth”, he said.
The biologist believes that the animal had recently had its mouth glued shut, as it was apparently healthy. When removing the glue, however, the team observed that the mucosa in the frog’s mouth was red because of the substance used in the mistreatment.
Afterwards, the animal was medicated, kept under observation and released into the wild.
According to the biologist, the cane toad is quite common in the region and feeds on insects.
