Rumors were already circulating, but now the successor to the Nintendo Switch has been confirmed by none other than Shuntaro Furukawa, president of Nintendo. In a publication made this Tuesday (7) on X, formerly Twitter, Furukawa assured that the company will make an announcement about the new Nintendo Switch still “in this fiscal year”, which means that the news must be announced until March 31, 2025.

Furthermore, according to the publication, no mention will be made of “Nintendo Switch 2” – unofficial name given to the device’s successor – during Nintendo Direct, which takes place in June. Console fans, however, can expect news about new releases in the second half of 2024 for Nintendo’s portable device.

We will announce the successor to the Nintendo Switch this fiscal year. It will be over nine years since we announced the existence of the Nintendo Switch in May 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct in June to talk about the Nintendo Switch gaming calendar for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during this presentation“, wrote the president in X.

What will “Nintendo Switch 2” be like?

Although there is still no official information about the successor to the Nintendo Switch, some details about the device have already been released. One of them is that the new Switch will be fully backwards compatible with its predecessor – both in cartridge and digital media. The information was given exclusively by journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe, known as PH, on the X do Controle podcast.

According to the French portal Vandal, the device must maintain the Joy-Cons controls, but this time, with a magnetic suction attachment. Furthermore, according to the portal, the successor to the Switch also will have controls with new buttons on the sides, metallic SL and SR buttons and a new button below the Home.

A screen should be upgraded to 8 inches – bigger than the current one, which is 7 inches in the OLED version. The console base must use a USB-C connection (like cell phones) with support for 4K resolutionand should not change drastically in appearance.
