Madrid (Spain) – The new female generation stood out in the first round of the WTA 1000 in Madrid. Russian Mirra Andreeva, just 16 years old, led the young players’ day of victory this Wednesday.

Andreeva, who is already ranked 43rd in the WTA rankings, beat the American Taylor Townsend, ranked 58th, by 4/6, 6/1 and 7/5. Now training with Spanish Conchita Martínez, the Russian faces Czech Linda Noskova, 19 years old and 31st in the world, in the second round.

Andorran guest Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva, former youth number 1, beat Chinese Lin Zhu 6/4 and 6/3. Kasintseva, 18 years old and ranked 335th, challenges Italian Jasmine Paolini, number 13 in the world and WTA 1000 champion in Dubai.

Also 18 years old, Czech Sara Bejlek debuted by beating Russian Anna Blinkova 4/6, 6/3 and 6/3. Coming from qualifying, the current 136th in the world faces another Russian in the next round. She challenges Anna Kalinskaya, 25th in the rankings.

Two 19-year-old Americans, Robin Montgomery and Ashlyn Krueger, won the round. Left-handed Montgomery, 183rd in the rankings, beat Russian Elina Avanesyan with a double 6/2 and challenges Britain’s Katie Boulter. Krueger, 70th in the world, beat Japanese Nao Hibino by double 6/4 and faces Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova.

In addition to all these young players winning this Wednesday, the tournament also had a victory for 18-year-old Filipina Alexandra Eala last Tuesday. The former youth number 2 and current 170th in the professional ranking beat Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko by 2/6, 6/4 and 6/4. Her next rival is Romanian Sorana Cirstea.
