In the week of the death of Ziraldo, the greatest cartoonist in the history of Brazil, it is with joy that Waves celebrates the return of Surf Tira, authored by surfer Nicanor, once again on the cover of the largest virtual community of surfers in Brazil.

Nicanor María Sánchez, also known as Nica, is 42 years old, married and born in General Roca, Province of Río Negro, located in Argentine Patagonia, that is, beyond Mar del Plata.

A cartoonist since the age of 17, Nica has been a surfer since the age of 12. The fourth child (of six) of an agronomist and an artist, they changed countries in 1989, and, in 1994, went to Barra Velha, on the north coast of Santa Catarina, where he had the first contact with surfing.

While still studying in high school, he got his first job as a cartoonist in a local newspaper, where he dedicated himself to portraying coastal life, especially surfing.

He studied social communication, was a civil lifeguard at the Santa Catarina Military Fire Department for 11 seasons, working on the beaches of Syphodis*, Barra Velha, and Mar Grosso, Laguna, where he graduated as a fisheries engineer in 2015.

In 2010 he made his first publication on the Waves portal and along the way he has drawn around 1,500 comic strips, always with new, creative, intelligent ideas and an acidic humor that combines irony, sarcasm and a certain quite amusing debauchery.

Currently, Nicanor works as a design engineer and consultant for fish processing plants, and in addition to surf strips, he publishes cartoons on a Portal specialized in Aquaculture.

Portraying the situations (the more troubled the better) between surfers, the waves and the boards are the main focus of his humor, as well as the entire universe that surrounds surfing, its equipment, its beaches and its relationships.

Every Surf Tira is a new wave and every wave always has a surprise!

Author’s note – Syphodis is the affectionate name that the locals gave to Praia do Cerro, in Itajuba, Barra Velha, a falling beach with a powerful left (ideal swell from the Northeast / East) and with a shallow bank, where an unsuccessful drop can be quite turbulent and you can leave it finely grated.
