Corinthians makes the final adjustments to face Racing, from Uruguay, this Tuesday, at 9:30 pm (Brasília time), in the first round of the South American Championship. This will be Timão’s 35th game against a team from the neighboring country, home to some of the club’s notable stories.

The first clash against their neighbors was in 1951, against a group of Uruguayan players. It was the first time that the club played an international game outside Brazilian territory. The rival had five world champions a year earlier, in the infamous Maracanaço.

Timão won 4-1, with Luizinho, Nelsinho and Baltazar, twice, securing the victory. The squad, led by Newton Senra, entered the field with Cabeção; Homero, Rosalém, Idário and Touguinha, Julião, Cláudio Christóvam, Luizinho and Baltazar; Carbone and Columbus. Furthermore, Roberto, Nardo and top scorer Nelsinho entered during the second stage.

From there, a reasonably successful trajectory followed in Uruguayan territory, mainly through official Conmebol competitions.

Corinthians has a 59.8% success rate in games against Uruguayans throughout history. There are 17 wins, ten draws and seven defeats in the 34 clashes played. There were 61 goals scored and 37 goals conceded.

Throughout history, Corinthians has faced Racing, this week’s rival. In the 2010 Libertadores, the team led by Mano Menezes fell into the same group as the Uruguayans, winning both games: in Brazil 2-1 and on the opponent’s field 2-0. The team came out ranked first in Group 1, with 16 points.

Now, Timão is once again looking for triumphs against a team from Uruguay. The team led by António Oliveira is in Group F and also faces Nacional, from Paraguay, and Argentinos Juniors, from Argentina.
