Monte Carlo (Monaco) – Scheduled for next week, the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 is slowly starting to receive its main stars for the 2024 edition. This Monday, one of the activities that caught the most attention was the training between the Serbian Novak Djokovic and the Danish Holger Rune, two of the first players to arrive in the Principality of Monaco.

Eliminated in the third round of Indian Wells, Djoko skipped the Miami contest in recent weeks, claiming he would like to balance his personal and professional schedule. Since then, he returned to Belgrade and began preparing for the European clay tour. On the other hand, Rune fell during his debut in Florida and also returned home early, allowing him to focus on adapting to clay.

Two-time champion in 2013 and 2015, Djokovic hasn’t reached the tournament’s final since then, with his best campaigns in recent years being the quarterfinals in 2017 and 2019. Last season, he didn’t make it past the round of 16. Rune, in turn, is the current runner-up, having lost the title to Russian Andrey Rublev. At 20 years old, he will only compete in the event for the fourth time in his career.

Paul does not recover and is out of the tournament
Still undergoing treatment on his ankle after spraining it in the first round of Miami, American Tommy Paul will be an important casualty in Monte Carlo. Current number 15 in the world, the 26-year-old player has been having a good season, with a title in Dallas, a final in Delray Beach and a semi in Indian Wells.

Compatriot Marcos Giron will take his place, currently in 51st place in the rankings and who was surpassed by Paul himself in the Dallas decision. He even made the semi in Delray Beach, falling to Taylor Fritz, who would become the event champion.
