Max Verstappen and Red Bull are saying goodbye to Lee Stevenson, chief mechanic who opted for a new challenge after 18 years with the team. Stevenson will head to a ‘team on the other side of the pit lane’.

The announcement of the departure was made by the mechanic himself via Instagram. His last day at Red Bull Racing was yesterday (Thursday, March 28), and from Monday (April 1) he will already be integrated into a new Formula 1 team, whose name has not been revealed, but which, according to Stevenson, is at the other end of the pit lane.

This means that the experienced mechanic will be working next weekend at the Japanese GP. Therefore, there will be no ‘gardening period’ for Stevenson, which would force him to be away for a while before starting work on the new team.

Throughout his career at Red Bull, which began in 2006 from Jordan, Stevenson built a solid career. He started as a second mechanic, progressed to first mechanic in 2014, and eventually became chief mechanic.

“Hello everyone, I hope you are well. I just wanted to let you know that you won’t be seeing any more Red Bull posts from me, as today is my last day here. It’s been an incredible 18 years and everything I’ve achieved with the team has been absolutely fantastic,” Stevenson said on Instagram.

“I worked on the first car here, the RB2, then the RB16B and now the RB19. It was an incredible journey. I just want to thank everyone here. It was a sensational time. In 2006, when I started, I never thought we would win races, win poles and championships, but we achieved all of that. It was simply incredible. Now it’s a new chapter. It starts on Monday when I fly to Japan to start working with my new team on the other side of the pit lane. It will be a big challenge, but I am ready to face it”, he concluded.
