Australian GP could open F1 season in 2025

-

The Formula 1 Australian GP, held at the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne, could once again be the first stage on the category’s calendar in 2025.

Traditionally, the F1 season has started in Melbourne since the circuit’s debut in 1996. In recent years, Bahrain has taken this position, but the 2025 calendar is expected to change due to Ramadan.

Journalist Joe Saward, through his JSBM newsletter, states that official confirmation has not yet come out, but the 2025 calendar should be released earlier than usual.

If Melbourne’s return for the opening is confirmed, the season would start on March 9, followed by the Chinese GP a week later. The calendar would still have a one-week break before a triple round with Japan (March 30), Bahrain (April 6) and Saudi Arabia (April 13).

It is worth remembering that the Australian GP has the biggest contract among the current circuits, guaranteeing its presence until 2037. This long relationship was the result of two renewals in 2022, the first, in June, extended the contract until 2035 and provided for five races in that period. , the second, in December, added two more years.

F1’s confidence in Melbourne is reflected in the increase in attendance. After two years of absence due to the pandemic (2020 and 2021), the GP in 2022 broke Melbourne’s attendance record, with more than 419,000 spectators. This number rose to 444,000 in 2023 and reached 452,055 spectators this year, becoming the third highest figure in history, behind only the 2023 British GP (480,000) and the 1995 Adelaide GP (520,000).
