At least two cities in Rio Grande do Sul hit by floods in recent weeks will have to change location, albeit partially. According to the authorities, there is no point in rebuilding public buildings and part of the residential neighborhoods in the same place they have always been.
This is the case, for example, of Roca Saleswhich is 143 km from Porto Alegre, which suffered from the latter, its third flood in eight months. According to the mayor Amilton Fontana (MDB), at least 50% of the municipality must change its address. After cleaning the streets, unblocking roads and resuming public services, a study must be carried out with the aim of identifying a safe area to build new houses, schools, industries, a hospital and city hall headquarters.
Another similar case is that of the municipality and Muslim (115 km from the capital of Rio Grande do Sul), which was also hit by the floods of September and November last year and again now. At least 30% of buildings will have to be transferred to another area, according to the mayor Matthew Trojan (MDB).
The great flood of 41
The phenomenon of flooding in the two cities is not unprecedented, but it is rare and has not occurred since the great flood of 1941. Between these last three and the other older one, there were only heavy rains with occasional floods.
This time, however, it was not like that. The two municipalities had several areas completely devastated. Traffic signs were improvised with graffiti on walls to indicate the route to neighboring cities.
There is no place to throw away the rubbish and everything is piled up, with the streets full of rubbish. Roca Sales was incommunicado for three days, while Muçum is in the dark until this Friday (10), and is expected to remain that way for another four days.
The two municipalities are located in the Taquari Valleya region bathed by the Taquari River.
