MetSul Meteorologia warned this Monday that the critical scenario caused by the floods in RS would continue for a long period. The warning applies to Porto Alegre, the Metropolitan region and other cities affected by river floods.
According to MetSul, some parts of the Capital, the Metropolitan region and valleys most punished by the rains will be uninhabitable for weeks to months due to the destruction of housing, infrastructure and the collapse of essential public services, which will have to be rebuilt.
The level of Guaíba, which today fell to 5.26m, remains close to the peak of 5.30m. Despite the decrease, the high elevation of Lagoa dos Patos and the large volume of water that will descend complicates the flow, even with favorable wind conditions.
The scenario in the coming days becomes more complicated because the weather conditions, excellent today, will not continue like this. On Wednesday, the areas affected by the floods in Greater Porto Alegre and the valleys may experience rain again, but it will not be high-volume precipitation that will affect river levels.
On Thursday, the ingress of cold air without strong intensity, in addition to bringing refreshment, will be responsible for causing wind from the South quadrant in the North of Lagoa dos Patos. The effect will be to dam the Guaíba, which may rise or even have its fall stopped or reduced for about a day.
“The biggest concern is the indications from the numerical models that between the 10th and 15th of May there would be a new episode of instability with the risk of excessive rain in Rio Grande do Sul. Without the volumes of the end of April and the beginning of May, but which could reach high accumulations. The rain would affect Porto Alegre and the headwaters of the rivers that flow into Guaíba”, reports MetSul.
