iPhone 15 Pro Max leads, and Galaxy S24 Ultra is the best-selling Android phone in the 1st quarter

Apple and Samsung dominated the ranking with the ten best-selling cell phones in the world in the 1st quarter of 2024, according to data released by Counterpoint this Monday (06). The list suggests that the consumers are increasingly interested in top of the linesince, out of the total, seven models cost more than US$600 (around R$3,000).

According to the survey, the iPhone 15 Pro Max was the best-selling cell phone in the 1st quarter of 2024. The preliminary market share of Apple’s current most powerful cell phone was 4.4%, surpassing the iPhone 15, in second place, with 4.3% of market share. Completing the podium, the iPhone 15 Pro occupies third position with 3.7%.

Although it belongs to the previous generation, the iPhone 14 came in fourth place with 1.9% market share, surpassing demand for the iPhone 15 Plus, which recorded 1.3% of global cell phone sales in the 1st quarter. This data reiterates that demand for the “Plus” variants of the iPhone is lower than that of other Apple models.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra appears in the ranking as the best-selling cell phone in the Android universe. Its market share ties with the iPhone 14, which led sales in the 1st quarter in 2023. Just below, is the Galaxy A15 5G, which is one of the South Korean brand’s new basic cell phones, with 1.5% of market share.

The Galaxy A15 5G marked one of the most significant advances in the line by finally replacing LCD screens with Super AMOLED, guaranteeing a better visual experience for users in a more affordable price segment. This is the cheapest model in the ranking.

Returning to the high-end segment, the Galaxy S24 draws attention for being among the ten best-selling, since its predecessor, the Galaxy S23, was unable to overcome the demand for Samsung’s cheapest cell phones in the 1st quarter of 2023. Other models that appear on the list include the Galaxy A54 and Galaxy A34.

Experts from the market analysis company highlight that the growth in popularity of Apple’s “Pro” lineas it recorded half of the brand’s total sales in the previous quarter — a significant increase compared to 24% in the 1st quarter of 2020, the year in which the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro Max were launched.

On Samsung’s side, the success of its new generation of top of the line is Galaxy AI, a set of generative artificial intelligence tools for translation, text summarization, image editing and much more. In addition, the Galaxy S24 Ultra brings exclusive features such as an anti-reflective screen and a 50 MP periscopic camera with 5x zoom.

A Counterpoint states that consumers are keeping their cell phones for longer periods, since there are no major technological advances with each generation. This also reflects the preference for top-of-the-line products, which tend to remain with relevant technologies and receive new software features in updates for longer.
