The number of deaths caused by the rains in RS rises to 28 | Brazil

This Thursday (2), the number of deaths caused by the rains in Rio Grande do Sul rose to 28, and the government decreed state of public calamity. The last balance collected by the CBN report showed 24 deaths. According to the latest Civil Defense bulletin, at least 147 municipalities have already recorded damage due to rainand there is at least 20 people missing and 14,500 homeless.

Two alerts from the National Institute of Meteorology are valid until Friday (3). The latest balance sheet from energy concessionaires shows that 367 thousand points are without electricity and at least 556 thousand have water in the state. The state has been facing heavy rains since Monday (29) and forecast should extend until Sunday (5).

Rescue of victims in Rio Grande do Sul

According to the Brazilian Air Force, until this Thursday morning, 110 people were rescuedincluding a 2-year-old child who was in a critical condition.

Rescues are hampered due to bridges destroyed or washed away by the force of water. There are around 135 total road closures.

Dam broke; population in the surrounding area should seek high places

The dam of 14 de Julho hydroelectric plantwhich is in Serra Gaúcha, partially ruptured. The right section of the dam collapsed due to the increase in river flow and heavy rains.

The guidance is that the population of surrounding cities seek shelter in the highest possible locationssince the partial rupture increases water speed.

The rupture is still being investigated by Aneel. Another 13 dams are monitored in the statewith five of them already in the evacuation process.

Flooding of rivers in RS: Taquari River has the highest level in history

The Taquari River passed from 30 metersreaching the highest level in history in Lajeado and Estrela, in the Taquari Valley. In Porto Alegre, the level of the Guaíba had already exceeded, in the early afternoon of this Thursday, the flood level, which is 3 meters. In the last update from the city hall, the level had already reached 3.14 meters. The Civil Defense forecast is that the water will still exceed 4 meters.

The Cais Mauá floodgates were closed, which is a containment system to prevent water from entering the streets of the center of the capital.

Lula visits RS and promises field hospital in the state

President Lula, this Thursday, was in Santa Maria, one of the most affected cities, and said that there will be no shortage of resources to help Rio Grande do Sul. The president once again cited the climate changes as a subject that needs to be discussed by all world authorities.

On that occasion, the federal government also announced that a field hospital will be set up in Lajeado, in Vale do Taquari. The structure should be assembled this Thursday, with 40 infirmary beds. Among the needs requested by Governor Eduardo Leite is air assistance.
