The airline Gol announced the temporary suspension of the dog and cat transportation service in the aircraft hold, following the death of the dog Joca. The measure comes into force from this Wednesday (24) and will last 30 days, until May 23.
Gol states that this period will be dedicated to completing the investigation into the incident. A Temporary interruption affects the sale of the dog and cat transportation service in the aircraft hold. There will be no change for customers who take their pets in the plane cabin.
According to the company, customers who have already contracted the transport of their animals through the affected services within the 30 days of suspension can request a full refund of the amount paid, including the ticket price. The company also offers to postpone the trip, free of charge, until after 05/23 on flights until 12/31/2024.
The case
This Monday (22), a 5-year-old dog died during air transport by Gollog, a Gol company, after an error in the destination. The Golden Retriever breed animal would go from Guarulhos International Airport, in São Paulo, to Sinop, in Mato Grosso, on the same flight as its owner. The pet, however, ended up being placed on a plane that boarded for Fortaleza, Ceará.
Joca was sent back to Guarulhos and, when his owner arrived to find him, the dog was dead. The family accuses the company of negligence and points out that no veterinarian was called to evaluate the pet. Joca would have been left inside the kennel, on the track, in the sun. The airline reports that it accompanied the animal throughout the journey and that the “unexpected death” was in SP.
Upon disembarking in Sinop, the owner João Fantazzini, was waiting for the puppy when he learned that, for a “operational failure”, the animal had been taken to the wrong destination. He chose to return to São Paulo to welcome Joca. The boy stated, however, that he found the dog dead inside the company’s kennel in Guarulhos. According to the death certificate, Joca died from a cardiorespiratory arrest, but without further explanation.
In a statement, Gol said it was surprised by the animal’s death and launched a priority internal investigation to investigate what happened. The company stated that the dog received care from the team in the capital of Ceará, and that it died shortly after landing in São Paulo. “We sympathize with the suffering of Joca’s tutor.
