Rio – The Management of Federal University of Rio (UFRJ)together with the Dean and Dean of Undergraduate Studies, met this Friday (3) to find solutions, both for the issue of the building structure of the School of Physical Education and Sports (EEFD), as well as issues related to academic activities in the current period. The encounter took place after part of an eave gave way and broke the walls of an access corridor to the EEFD gymnasium and classrooms, around 10pm on Wednesday (1st). Classes remain suspended indefinitely.

According to data that is still being collected in the technical management system for real estate assets, Reab (ETU/UFRJ), it takes around R$567 million for buildings with serious anomalies for the restoration of university buildings. Roberto Medronho, rector of UFRJ, highlighted that funds are urgently needed to restore several UFRJ buildings. “The ETU has carried out a survey of, to date, 52% of our buildings. The estimated cost for recovery in 2023 was R$796 million. We cannot wait any longer”, emphasized the rector.

The EEFD Management published a statement, on Thursday night (2), inviting teachers, technicians and students to a face-to-face, purposeful meeting of the expanded Departmental Council, next Monday (6), from 2 pm to 4 pm, in the Rodolpho Paulo Rocco auditorium (Quinhentao). The topic that will be on the agenda will be the collapse that occurred in the EEFD building and developments for 2024/1.

Another collapse at UFRJ

On September 6th last year, also on the eve of the holiday, at around 3:30 pm, the marquee of an area of ​​the EEFD Dance course, where four classrooms were located, collapsed. UFRJ is still awaiting a Civil Defense inspection of the entire unit building, but classes are suspended indefinitely. The collapse occurred in the entrance corridor, in front of the Extension Coordination.

The classes that are taking place outside the EEFD building and are from other units (anatomy, those at Praia Vermelha, etc.) are maintained. Only those that returned on April 24th are cancelled.
