The government is studying measures to cover part of the energy tariffs and reduce the electricity bill for consumers.

The statement was made by the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, after a meeting this Monday (1st).

  • use resources from oil auctions the state-owned Pré-sal Petróleo SA (PPSA) — which manages the portion of oil and gas to which the Union is entitled in pre-salt contracts;
  • place these expenses in the Union Budgetremoving these expenses from the limit established by the fiscal framework;
  • equalize costs between the free energy market and the regulated market.

Today, the free energy market can only be accessed by companies that consume around R$10,000 per month. Residential consumers and smaller businesses, for example, are forced to purchase from energy distributors.

“We know that it is not a simple matter, many distortions have been created in the electricity sector over the last decade, many subsidies have become part of the energy bill in Brazil, very strictly sacrificing the regulated consumer, who is the consumer who receives the energy bill at home, and we try, as always, to raise awareness of the minister [Fernando] Haddad, so that a solution can be given”, declared Silveira.

The minister also stated that this was the first of other meetings to discuss the tariff issue. He did not detail how these resources will be used to reduce tariffs and what part of the costs will be covered by the government.

  • growth in subsidies paid by consumers;
  • cost of contracting energy;
  • investments in transmission.

In 2024, subsidies must represent 12.5% of the electricity bill, on average. The projection of the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) is that the account grows on average 5.6% this year.

The suggestions presented by the Minister of Mines and Energy must deal with a “structural solution” for the increase in energy tariff adjustments.

The draft provisional measure is at the Civil House and is still awaiting publication by the government.

Regarding the use of Eletrobras resources, the minister said that No need to talk to the company.

“This is a debt owed by Eletrobras to Brazil, it is a debt that is included in the law that privatized it and only the National Congress has to authorize it, so that we can securitize and pay these bills that were irresponsibly assumed by the Minister of Economy of the previous government on behalf of Brazil’s energy consumers”, he stated.
