The Lord of the Rings cast pays homage to Bernard Hill

Actor Bernard Hill, best known for his role in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, passed away last Sunday (5), at the age of 79. The Brit received tributes from his Middle Earth co-stars, who paid tribute to him during his participation in Comic Con in Liverpool, England.

“So we lost a member of our family this morning, Bernard Hill, King Théoden, passed away.”began Sean Astin, Sam’s interpreter. “So we want to take a moment before we leave the stage to honor him. We loved him. He was fearless, he was funny, he was surly, he was irascible, he was beautiful.”

Pippin actor Billy Boyd said he didn’t think anyone else could say the words of the books’ author, JRR Tolkien, as well as he could. “The way he grounded those words in realism. He broke my heart. He will be greatly missed”said Boyd.

The protagonist of the trilogy, Elijah Wood, who played Frodo, paid tribute to his colleague in a post on X (Twitter). He posted a photo of Hill, taken by Viggo Mortensen, aka Aragorn. “Farewell to our friend, our king, Bernard Hill. We will never forget you.”

Dominic Monaghan, aka Merry, posted the same photo on his Instagram with the caption: “The Broken King left for the gray meadows, but he will always be remembered.”.

The actor was nominated twice for a Bafta, the “British Oscar”, in the TV categories for the miniseries “Boys from the Blackstuff” (1982) and for the television film “A Very Social Secretary” (2005).

In addition to the role of King Theoden in “The Lord of the Rings”, Hill’s best-known role in his career was in the classic “Titanic” (1997), in which he played the ship’s captain. He is the only actor to be in two Oscar record-breaking films: “Titanic” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King”, which won 11 statuettes each.
