Before seeing Planet of the Apes in the cinema, we offer a small update: How did the previous episode, released in theaters in August 2017, end?

On May 9th, The public will be able to see the new chapter in the Planet of the Apes saga at the cinema. Called The Reign, this feature film is the sequel War for the Planet of the Apes, which hit theaters in August 2017.

7 long years later, under what circumstances will we find primates? Before embarking on this new adventure, we offer you a little focus on the outcome of the previous part, so as not to get lost when watching Planet of the Apes: Reign.

It is worth mentioning that The War put an end to the trilogy started in 2011 by Rupert Wyatt with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Matt Reeves took up the torch with the release of The Showdown in 2014 and then The War in 2017.

Caesar’s legacy

Led by Andy Serkis, who “played” Caesar, the trilogy grossed US$1.7 billion at the global box office. This success therefore allowed the beginning of a new chapter with The Reign, under the direction of Wes Ball.

At the end of War for the Planet of the Apes, Caesar managed to free his peers from the relentless yoke of the Colonel, played by Woody Harrelson. Unfortunately, during the battle, a sniper injured the monkey with an arrow. After traveling through a desert, the leader and his gang arrive at a tender place discovered by Rocket (Terry Notary).

Very weakened by his wound, Caesar begins to faint. His friend Maurice (Karin Konoval) then promises him that he will do everything to ensure that his story is passed down from generation to generation. The monkey leader then sheds one last tear before taking his last breath.

The promise made to Caesar

The Reign is, therefore, in line with the promise made by Maurice as a direct continuation of the trilogy started 13 years ago. Caesar’s story has been well passed down over time, however, certain primate clans have distorted his message.

This is the starting point for a new chapter, which takes place many years after Caesar’s death (the film does not specify the number of years, stating only that the story takes place “several generations later”).

With Planet of the Apes: Reign, understand what the franchise’s timeline looks like

The monkeys have definitely taken over. Humans, in turn, have regressed to the wild state and live in seclusion. As a new tyrannical leader gradually builds his empire, a young ape embarks on a dangerous journey that will lead him to question everything he knows about the past and make choices that will define the future of both apes and humans.
