Almost 30 years after its release, this is a good time to (re)discover it.

The 1990s are full of great science fiction, from the most innovative, like The Matrix, to the most bizarre, like Attack of the Worms. In the large selection of films that hit theaters during this decade, The Experience may have gone unnoticed by many people, despite its iconic poster always being in evidence in VHS rental stores at the time.

Although its quality has been criticized over the years, its popularity is due to several scenes considered traumatic by the audience and also to the various broadcasts on open TV. The story begins with the escape of a girl subjected to scientific experiments.

Created from extraterrestrial DNA, she becomes a much-wanted fugitive. Wherever she goes, the deaths multiply. The man responsible for her creation hires a team of researchers to locate and stop her before it’s too late.

“It’s one of the best science fiction films I’ve ever seen” Steven Spielberg surrenders to the greatness of Dune and praises one scene above all others

Under the direction of Roger Donaldson, from Defying the Limits and The Pact, The Experience is no match for science fiction masterpieces, but it remains – ironically – a good audiovisual experiment due to the imaginary absurdity created by the story: from the monster’s design made by artist responsible for Alien’s Xenomorph, HR Giger, to hiring super model Natasha Henstridge as the heroine Sil.

From the perspective of body horror, the union of the actress’s beauty with the dark creature that develops throughout the plot is, to say the least, interesting. In fact, many people consider the film to be a female equivalent of David Cronenberg’s The Fly, although the latter is superior in several aspects. The Experience offers many striking scenes, such as the one that takes place in a swimming pool. How not to mention the evolution of the creature that emerges from its cocoon in a train carriage. A horrible and impressive image.

This science fiction ended in failure, but now the author promises to revive it in a new film with the screenwriters of Wandinha

Almost 30 years after its launch, this thriller Science fiction has aged a bit, especially when it comes to digital effects. It still has a certain charm for those who are thirsty for excitement – as long as they avoid sequels.

Currently, The Experience is available in the MGM+ catalog and can also be rented on Prime Video.
