Fans of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ can finally breathe a sigh of relief (or not): the next sequels are, yes, in the process of being produced, and soon an entire crew will venture into mysterious waters again. The news came from the franchise’s own producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, who for an American news portal revealed the next steps in the saga and also outlined the fate of Johnny Depp as the iconic Jack Sparrow.

The last time pop culture saw the famous pirates traveling on mystical adventures was in 2017, when the fifth chapter ‘Salazar’s Revenge’ debuted in cinemas around the world. The film, starring the obvious Depp, alongside Keira Knightley as the passionate Elizabeth Swann, also featured Javier Bardem, Geoffrey Rush and Kaya Scodelario. It brought in almost 800 million dollars to Disney’s pockets, repeating the success of the previous four.

Since then, however, no other sequel has reached cinema screens, and the sea of news began to become a desert for fans of the franchise. Over the past seven years, numerous Dead on the Beach announcements have been made, including a version with an all-female cast, which would be led by Margot Robbie. Apparently some time later, the project was cancelled.

With the scandals surrounding Depp and his convoluted legal action against his ex-wife, Amber Heard (and vice versa), the future of the series really seemed uncertain – and so did Depp’s career.

Now, Bruckheimer has decided to open the doors to the secret vault of information about ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, giving direction to so many people lost amid the lack of news. To ComicBook.com, he said: “We’re going to do a ‘Pirates’ reboot, so it’s easier to put it all together, because then you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”

Despite not having named anyone by name, there are those who speculate that these are Depp himself or even Margot Robbie.

With the confirmation of a reboot, however, it is logical to think that the franchise will move away from the narrative with Sparrow, that is, no Johnny Depp in sight.

Still in 2022, The Hollywood Reporter’ website had spoken to the mega-producer, who said he had two ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ projects in hand. “We developed two of them — one with Margot Robbie and one with a younger cast,” he said at the time. “The one with Margot needs some repairs. The one with the new cast is closer [de estar pronto]. Hopefully, we’ll do both.”

In the same 2022 interview, when asked about Johnny Depp’s participation in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 6’, he replied, evasively: “I would love to have him in the film – that’s all I can say.”

After confirmation that the fate of ‘Pirates’ is a reboot, it’s hard to believe that Sparrow will even have a few minutes of screen time.

The sixth chapter of the franchise is being scripted by Craig Mazin, who also wrote scripts for two television hits, ‘The Last of Us’ and ‘Chernobyl’. Alongside him, Ted Elliot, responsible for the text for the animation ‘Shrek’, also signs the project.

To The Los Angeles Times, Mazin said he was surprised to hear that Disney had accepted the project, as it was ‘very strange’. “We presented the proposal and we thought there was no way they could buy it, it’s very strange. And they bought it! And then, we wrote an incredible script, and the strike happened and now everyone is waiting”, he revealed in August last year .

So far, the sixth ‘Pirates’ has no name, no synopsis, much less a confirmed cast. What can be certain, however, is that something completely new and, according to the producers themselves, ‘strange’, is coming to shake up the billion-dollar franchise.
