Summary
The story of ‘City of God’ is set in the city of Rio de Janeiro and based on facts, with many of the characters portrayed in the film inspired by people from the locality.

‘God’s city’ It forever marked the imagination of Brazilians, as well as national cinema. The narrative presented a series of complex and deep characters. Buscapé, Bené, Zé Pequeno, Mané Galinha, Cabeleira and others, are names that do not go unnoticed, even 21 years after the premiere of the production directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund.

All of them are based on the great literary work of Paulo Lins, released in 1997. In the book, the author shares his experience in one of the largest favelas in Rio de Janeiro: Cidade de Deus, a neighborhood in the West Zone of the city of Rio.

Based on facts and being a denunciation of the reality of a portion of the Brazilian population, it is easy to wonder if any of the characters known, both from literary works and from films, really existed.

It is also worth highlighting that the story will soon receive a continuation in series format, produced by O2 Filmes and released on HBO and streaming Max, directed by Aly Muritiba.

Zé Pequeno

José Eduardo Barreto Conceição, known as Zé Pequeno, was one of the city’s residents who ended up becoming involved in crime at a young age, when he was known as Dadinho. As in the film, Dadinho was actually called to be a lookout in a robbery at one of the motels in the region with a group of young people.
