(Re)discover The Hound and the Fox, Disney’s first classic from the 1980s, which includes one of the most moving scenes in the studio’s history.

In the heart of the forest, chased by the barking of a pack of dogs, a fox runs at full speed, carrying its cub in its mouth. Shortly before being shot and killed by a hunter, she manages to hide the baby at the foot of a fence. Thanks to Mother Owl, who takes him under her wing, the fox cub is adopted by a lovely farmer, who gives him the name Dodó.

At the same time, in the house next door, old hunter Samuel Guerra acquires a new puppy, Toby, who he intends to train to track all types of game. When they meet, Dodó and Toby quickly become best friends, not suspecting for a second that hounds often kill foxes.

A complicated period for Disney

Released in the early 1980s, during a particularly complicated period for Disney, whose artists separated due to artistic disagreements (Don Bluth, for example, ended up leaving the company to found his own studios and sign films such as Fievel – An American Tale and Em Busca do Vale Encantado), the project The Dog and the Fox managed, however, to overcome the discord to offer the public a beautiful story of friendship.

Adapted from a short story by Daniel P. Mannix, which had a much darker plot than the one we know, the 24th animated classic from Enchanted Studios is remembered mainly for the adorable meeting of its two protagonists and their carefree banter, but also for a scene which is still one of the most painful in Disney history.

One of the saddest scenes in the studio

We are talking, of course, about the scene in which, after realizing that Samuel Guerra would not hesitate to shoot his fox at the first opportunity, the farmer Viúva Tita decides to take Dodó to the forest and say goodbye to him. To the sound of sad music, accompanied by a text sadly recited by the poor lady, the scene is absolutely moving.

So, be sure to bring a tissue when you (re)discover this adorable work from the Disney studios with your family!

What kids will love…

  • The film’s secondary characters, especially Mother Owl, who is so comforting and captivating.
  • The beautiful friendship between Toby and Dodó when they are puppies.

What can they worry about…

  • The evil hunter and his dog Boss, whose tantrums and wild barks are enough to worry the little ones.
  • The fearsome bear that attacks the characters at the end of the film, very successful and therefore quite scary.
