The success of Top Gun: Maverick (2022), sequel to the classic Top Gun (1986) which became the highest-grossing film of Tom Cruise’s career, led to Top Gun 3 being officially announced. The new film is in development, but we don’t know yet when we’ll see Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell again.

In an interview with ScreenRant, producer Jerry Bruckheimer gave updates on Top Gun 3 and revealed that he doesn’t know when the star will have free time to film the sequel.

Joe Kosinski had a wonderful idea for the story, and he [Tom Cruise] said ‘I really like this’, so we’re developing it. But you never know when it will be done because Tom is very busy. Tom Cruise is busy filming Mission: Impossible 8, the sequel to Mission: Impossible 7: Reckoning Part 1 (2023). Top Gun 3 should maintain the successful formula of Top Gun: Maverick, with Tom Cruise back alongside Miles Teller and Glen Powell, producers Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison, and Joseph Kosinski directing.

The biggest success of Tom Cruise’s career, Top Gun: Maverick was the second highest-grossing film of 2022 with almost US$1.5 billion raised worldwide. The film was nominated in six Oscar categories, including Best Film, and emerged victorious in the Best Sound category.

In Top Gun: Maverick, we follow the story of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise), a recognized and decorated old-fashioned Navy pilot. However, none of this was enough for his career to take off, as he stopped being a captain and became an instructor. He remains the same rebellious pilot he always was, who doesn’t hesitate to break limits and defy death. But now, Maverick needs to prove that the human factor is still fundamental in the contemporary world of technological wars.
