Next Monday (13), the Superior Council of the Public Defender’s Office of Santa Catarina will meet urgently to decide the suspension of yet another public defender’s office, now in the district of Lages. It will be the 10th defender’s office with services suspended throughout the State.

The Regional Center of the DPE of Lages, with the suspension, will be impaired by half of its capacity. Of the six defense offices installed there, two are already suspended.
The need for structuring the Public Defender’s Office by the State Government has already been highlighted by the TCE in a recent technical report.
According to the General Public Defender, Renan Soares de Souza, the lack of structuring of the institution and career in the State, generated a record of career dropouts in Santa Catarina, approaching 70% in the last competition alone, which has already ended.
“The approved nominees went to other public defender offices in the country, a situation that jeopardizes the care of thousands of vulnerable people from Santa Catarina. Unfortunately, the tendency is for other centers in the State to be suspended.”
The General Public Defender also informs that, since March, projects have been underway at Alesc with the aim of breaking the cycle of evasion, citing as an example the bill that creates the organ accumulation institute, already existing in all other Public Defender’s Offices. from the country.
The creation of this institute was recommended by the TCE’s recent technical audit and allows the appointment of public defenders to act in the event of vacancies, maintaining the continuity of services to the population.
According to the General Public Defender, the lack of the institute, which exists in all bodies of the country’s justice system, except in the Santa Catarina Public Defender’s Office, is an essential management tool to prevent service suspensions in the event of vacancies and dismissals. career, especially in the current scenario of the Public Defender’s Office, with a serious scenario of evasion of public defenders.
The project awaits analysis by the Alesc Constitution and Justice Commission.

Currently, there are only 129 public defenders in 26 regional centers, representing 23.2% of the total districts. The service is aimed especially at the population of Santa Catarina with a monthly income of up to three minimum wages (the institution’s target audience).
