Thirteen professionals will compose the team of authors to create the teaching material

Educators Paula Cristina de Carvalho Gonçalves and Maria Araújo de Sousa, both effective teachers from the municipal education network who work at the Centro Municipal de Educação Infantil (Cmei) Príncipes e Princesas, were selected to become authors of the new teaching material for 1st and 2nd year of Portuguese Language, which will be prepared exclusively for the Alfabetiza Mais Tocantins program: Compromisso Tocantinense Literate Child. The state government’s initiative aims to teach all children in public schools in Tocantins to read and write by the end of the 2nd year of elementary school.

The two teachers will be part of the team of teachers/authors made up of 13 professionals from different regions of the State who will have the mission of developing, from June to August 2024, teaching material that contributes to the pedagogical routine of other teachers in the literacy process , ensuring the quality of teaching and learning. The material prepared will be available in schools in the 2025 academic year.

According to the State Department of Education (Seduc), the choice of teachers/authors was carried out by Nova Escola, in partnership with Associação Bem Comum (ABC) and Seduc, jointly responsible for the selection, training and monitoring throughout the process of constructing teaching material.

Professor Maria Araújo de Sousa spoke about the feeling of having been selected among more than 260 professionals in the field. “I feel very grateful for the opportunity to be able to contribute to the literacy of children in Tocantins. The experiences of my teaching practice at Cmei Príncipes e Princesas will contribute to the construction of material that will support the teaching practice of literacy teachers in Tocantins”, highlighted the educator.

According to the teacher, the preparation process will be in partnership with the Nova Escola Association, the Bem Comum Association (ABC) and the Tocantins Department of Education, within the scope of the Partnership for Literacy in a Collaborative Regime (Parc) at national level. “Six meetings will be held with the Nova Escola engagers with guidelines for preparing the material that will complement the practice of the literacy teacher”, she added.

Professor Paula Cristina highlighted that the feeling is one of great joy in achieving such a result, as there were many professional colleagues. “This process aims to promote reflection on literacy work with our children, bringing to the end material to collaborate with. At each meeting, we will have the opportunity to reflect with renowned authors on classroom practices, looking at the diversity that is the state of Tocantins”, she assessed.
